چکیده

This paper proposes the first implementation of an atomic storage tolerant to mobile Byzantine agents. Our implementation is designed for the roundbased synchronous model where the set of Byzantine nodes changes from round to round. In this model we explore the feasibility of multi-writer multi-reader atomic register prone to various mobile Byzantine behaviors. We prove upper and lower bounds for solving the atomic storage in all the explored models. Our results, significantly different from the static case, advocate for a deeper study of the main building blocks of distributed computing while the system is prone to mobile Byzantine failures.

Minimal Byzantine Storage

Byzantine fault-tolerant storage systems can provide high availability in hazardous environments, but the redundant servers they require increase software development and hardware costs. In order to minimize the number of servers required to implement fault-tolerant storage services, we develop a new algorithm that uses a “Listeners” pattern of network communication to detect and resolve orderi...

A Correctness Proof for a Byzantine-Fault-Tolerant Read/Write Atomic Memory with Dynamic Replica Membership

We prove correctness of a Byzantine-fault-tolerant replication algorithm for a read/write atomic memory that supports a dynamic replica set.

Asynchronous BFT Storage with 2t+1 Data Replicas

The cost of Byzantine Fault Tolerant (BFT) storage is the main concern preventing its adoption in practice. This cost stems from the need to maintain at least 3t+ 1 replicas in different storage servers in the asynchronous model, so that t Byzantine replica faults can be tolerated. In this paper, we present MDStore, the first fully asynchronous read/write BFT storage protocol that reduces the n...

Consistency, Availability, and Convergence

We examine the limits of consistency in highly available and fault-tolerant distributed storage systems. We introduce a new property—convergence—to explore the these limits in a useful manner. Like consistency and availability, convergence formalizes a fundamental requirement of a storage system: writes by one correct node must eventually become observable to other connected correct nodes. Usin...

Atomic Broadcast: From Simple Message Di usion to Byzantine Agreement

In distributed systems subject to random communication delays and component failures, atomic broadcast can be used to implement the abstraction of synchronous replicated storage, a distributed storage that displays the same contents at every correct processor as of any clock time. This paper presents a systematic derivation of a family of atomic broadcast protocols that are tolerant of increasi...
